Foxboro Youth Basketball Association, Inc.

Town Team Rules

Town players should expect, each week, to have one weeknight practice and one weekend game.  Attendance is important to build team chemistry and develop skills.  Please make every attempt to attend both the weekly practice and game.

Participants who withdraw from any FYBA program prior to the first scheduled game of the season will be provided a full refund of all program and/or uniform fees paid.  Out of respect to the effort placed on creating equitable team rosters, refunds will not be afforded for a withdrawal after the first game of the season.

To facilitate and promote the participation of Foxborough youth in its programs, FYBA will accept registrations after the last of the scheduled registration dates.  Please note that all late registrations will be assessed a late fee as determined by the Board of Directors. Persons submitting a late registration will be permitted to participate to the extent that the FYBA program has available space. If no space is available at the time of such late registration, the prospective participant will be placed on a waitlist. If, at a later date, there is an opening in the desired program, the waitlisted participant will be invited into the program and assigned a team.

Players may be asked to participate in a player evaluation day for the D and C divisions.  The purpose of the town evaluation days is to evaluate the relative ability of the players so that the teams may be selected with a view to having a competitively balanced league.  Many players in these divisions are new to basketball and this session is helpful from that perspective.

Players in all divisions should wear sneakers and shorts and bring a refillable water bottle to each practice.  Team uniforms should be worn to each game.  Please do not bring soda or sports drinks or use water bottles that can easily spill if tipped.  Please respect our schools and custodial staff who afford us the ability to host practices and games in these gyms.

All enrolled participants must attend at least fifty percent (50%) of the regular scheduled games to be eligible to participate in the playoffs (if playoffs exist in that league). Exceptions to this requirement will be made for verified injury or illness.

The board of directors may adopt such other rules or regulations for player participants as may be necessary from time to time.

Guidelines and Policies for Town Coaches

  • The FYBA Director, for each town league, will provide to the FYBA Board of Directors a list of persons who have expressed an interest in coaching prior to the beginning of each season with a recommendation as to which coaches should be awarded a team as a Head Coach. The Board of Directors will then consider each candidate, his or her experience and aptitude, and determine by majority vote which candidates will be approved as Head Coach for the season.
  • With the exception of the D league, in the interest of balanced competition, assistant coaches will not be selected until after the draft of the teams. At that time, the Division Director will provide to the Board of Directors a list of persons who have expressed an interest in coaching prior to the beginning of each season, together with the Division Directors’ direction as to which individuals should be awarded a spot as an Assistant Coach. The Board of Directors will then consider each candidate, his or her experience and aptitude and determine by majority vote which candidates will be approved as Assistant Coaches for the season.
  • After the approval of all coaching assignments, all coaches must a) submit a CORI check, performed by the FYBA and b) complete Darkness to Light training within the past 24 months.
  • Coaches must make an effort to foster team camaraderie and skill development throughout the entire season for each player on the team.
  • Coaches are responsible for ensuring that all coaches, players and fans practice good sportsmanship before, during, and after each practice and game.

Playing Time Rules by League:

  • D & C League – Minimum 50% playing time with a ten (10) player roster. Generally, no player should play more than three (3) minutes more than any other player.
  • B League – Minimum 40% playing time with a ten (10) player roster.
  • A & Senior League – Minimum 30% playing time with a ten (10) player roster.
  • All coaches will be required to complete Concussion Training prior to the season: http://cdc.gov/concussion/HeadsUp/Training/Index.html
  • All coaches will make their best effort to not “run up” the score in the game. If a game becomes lopsided, you must adjust playing time and/or passing/shooting requirements of any star players to maintain a high level of sportsmanship throughout the game.
  • Coaches are responsible for returning all FYBA equipment at the designated time, following the season.
  • The board of directors may adopt such other rules or regulations for coaches as may be necessary from time to time.

Travel Teams Rules

  • FYBA Travel policy requires that player(s) can only attend the tryout for their current grade level.  No player will be allowed to “play-up” a grade level. In rare circumstances, to preserve the competitive balance of the C league, the FYBA Board of Directors may consider a submitted request from a 4th grade parent.  In order for approval, it must be approved by a majority vote of the Board of Directors.
  • FYBA Travel requires all players to attend tryouts to be selected to a Travel Basketball team. Special unforeseen occurrences, such as injury, family emergency, etc. will be seen by FYBA as an extenuating circumstance, at which time it will be up to the discretion of the Metrowest Coordinator and FYBA Board of Directors to make a decision as to that player being selected for a travel team without attending a tryout.
  • No parents will be allowed to remain in the gyms during the Metrowest tryouts.
  • FYBA will communicate rosters for all Metrowest Travel teams after the tryout session.  Players who do not make a travel team can contact either the FYBA Travel coach or the FYBA Metrowest Coordinator to ask any questions about their individual tryout.
  • It is expected, that the Metrowest basketball team be the #1 priority/sport for the winter, in order for all players to be chosen to be on travel teams.
  • It is a requirement that players attend all practices and games (medical, school or family-related absences are the exceptions to this rule).  Infractions of this can/will result in playing time adjustments and/or removal from the team with no refunds at the discretion of the head coach.
  • All players, including those who receive a scholarship for their FYBA registration fee, will still be required to pay the Metrowest fee as well as the fees required for a uniform.
  • The Board of Directors may adopt such other rules or regulations for player participants as may be necessary from time to time.

Guidelines and Policies for Travel Coaches:

  • Coaches will be adults, ages 18+.
  • FYBA may select travel head coaches, with the exception of the incoming 4th grade girls and boys travel teams, prior to the travel team tryouts to assist with appropriate roster construction. The 4th grade travel coaches will be selected, by the FYBA Board, after the travel team tryouts are complete and the roster has been set by the Metrowest Coordinator.
  • The head coach will oversee a 90-120 minute tryout which may include a combination of skills and drills, small-sided games, and scrimmages.
  • There will be one or two evaluators at each tryout along with one or two coaches.  Other than the head coach(es), parents of players trying out for those teams will not be selected as evaluators for that grade.
  • At the conclusion of the tryout, the coach should address the players and parents informing them as to the remainder of the tryout process (e.g. a possible 2nd tryout, time commitment to playing on a travel team, email notification of team rosters, etc.).
  • The coach should then meet with the evaluators to discuss their evaluations and determine the team rosters.  All evaluations will be collected/maintained by the Metrowest Coordinator and remain confidential.
  • Playing time for travel teams in grades 3-6: minimum of 40% in games per player.
  • Playing time for travel teams in grades 7 & 8: minimum of 25% in games per player.
  • All coaches will be required to complete Concussion Training prior to the season: http://cdc.gov/concussion/HeadsUp/Training/Index.html
  • Coaches must also adhere to all Metrowest coaching policies, including updating rosters, recording all game results, and providing requested feedback to the Metrowest portal.
